Approaches to coping with toxic managers and subordinates
There are few things less pleasant than being employed in a toxic workplace. It can drain your energy, your enthusiasm, and your drive. The source of the toxic energy can often be your boss, your coworkers, or your subordinates. Learning to cope and developing endurance is a necessary survival skill. No matter who they are, never complain or vent at the workplace. More often than not, this will hurt your own reputation rather than theirs. If you are dealing with a bully, keep firm. Bullies thrive on fear and feeling they have power over others. If you stay strong and brave, they will lose interest. If things eventually reach the point where you need to talk to HR, make sure you have a specific list of reasons and examples of how they disrespected you, or harmed you… Be as polite as possible. If you run into a wall with HR and are out of options, you may need to consider finding a new position in another organization. Working in a toxic environment can be tolerable for a time, but knowing that you are stuck in one indefinitely can be very harmful to your soul.
