When we dwell in negative thinking, our ruminating negative thoughts and worries actually carve pathways in our brains that are reinforced by the cyclical nature of brooding. By indulging in rumination, brooding, and self-punishing thoughts, we form nasty mental habits, making it easier to choose negative thinking over healthy thinking. The next time you feel tempted to brood, interrupt your thoughts by distracting yourself with a detailed project that needs your full attention, intentionally writing out thoughts that positively oppose the negative messages in your head, or pray for a mental paradigm shift-and then let go. Rumination will not help us control negative situations better, and in fact may make them worse. By consciously choosing to interrupt negative thinking and refusing to dwell in it, we can approach difficult situations from a place of positivity and health.
