I am no stranger to failure. I have done it in business, as a parent, as a wife, and as a volunteer. I hate it and love it….here is why. We all experience failure and loss. Often times, our initial gut reaction-that sick feeling like we’ve been punched-is so uncomfortable that we ignore it, avoiding or repressing it with impulsive behaviors or outright denial. The downside of this coping mechanism is that the emotion remains unresolved because we have refused to acknowledge it and let it go, and negative thoughts begin to propagate as the unresolved feeling lingers. A simpler, healthier way to move through failure is by first acknowledging the uncomfortable gut reaction, choosing to “feel through it”, allowing it to expend its energy and diminish (stick with it–it will go away!). Once the bodily reaction has diminished in intensity, you can consciously choose a more positive image of how you’d like the situation to play out next time. In other words – rewrite the story! Nurture your self-esteem back to a healthy state by recognizing that you are human and bound to fail. Learn that every failure is an opportunity for growth.
