Gratitude seems to be one of the measures of happiness; great icons of all faiths and backgrounds have expressed gratitude for their challenges, failures, and shortcomings as well as their triumphs and successes. Those who are truly grateful gain higher levels of greatness and more abundant living because they fully appreciate each moment, each event in life as a gift; all things offer an opportunity to discover and grow. Studies have shown that grateful people are less aggressive, less depressed, more helpful, more generous, have better relationships, and are overall more satisfied with life. Those who are grateful are happy where they’re at-they are not dwelling in a constant state of desire for “the next big thing”, which is an endless and unsatisfying cycle. If you feel overwhelmed by the thought of becoming grateful for everything in your life, start smaller. Start a gratitude journal -a simple spiral notebook will suffice – where you write down at least one thing you were grateful for each day. After you’ve done this practice for several days or weeks, challenge yourself by thinking of one thing that happened during the previous day that felt difficult or that you resented; what lesson did the event offer? How can you give thanks even for moments that seem painful?
