In America, our brains are preoccupied with work much of the time. Many of us tend towards a habit of overworking, and by Friday most of us have a sense that our brain is “full” for the week, though we continue to push through the day and even work into the evening or weekend. When we enmesh ourselves with the details of work in this way, we do not allow our brains downtime, and effectively create a situation where we can’t see the forest for the trees. The human brain can only remember and integrate so much information so rapidly, so while it may feel like we are accomplishing a lot by overworking, we may in fact be doing the opposite; the brain will retain what it deems as important based on past patterns and choices, and discard the rest. By giving our brains downtime, we create the necessary space to step back and see the bigger picture, allowing information to coalesce and integrate into a more rational whole instead of madly rushing through an endless list of tasks with the main purpose of checking them off. Furthermore, the brain requires enormous amounts of energy to function well, and if it is never afforded time to rest will not perform at its best. Make sure that your day and week are interspersed with periods of mental respite, and prioritize taking a weekend!
